CAMP COUNSELLORS

At Sport Western we take great pride in our selection of camp counsellors. The majority of our staff are University students and student-athletes. All staff are certified in standard First Aid and CPR C.

Your child’s experience is of great importance to us. We strive to develop and enhance our staff’s skills to ensure that your child’s camp experience is positive and rewarding. Extensive staff training is conducted prior the beginning of camp to ensure that our camp counsellors are well equipped for the daily tasks and challenges in a camp environment.

CODE OF BEHAVIOUR

To ensure the safety and enjoyment of all campers, Sport Western implements its own Code of Behaviour.

Inclusive Environment: Make new friends. Take turns, and be polite. Bullying and teasing will not be tolerated.
Safety: Listen to your camp counsellors. Think before you act. Be aware.
Celebrate Differences: Share ideas and learn about new cultures and individual’s challenges.
Take Responsibility: Help camp staff. Look out for your fellow campers. Make your time at Sport Western great.
Have Fun!

* It is also our expectation that all campers attending Sport Western are adequately toilet-trained. Although counsellors will always escort children to washroom facilities before, after, and during activities (if necessary), they will not be expected to provide hands-on assistance.

ATTENDANCE

Attendance is taken at the beginning of each day (at 1:00 PM for afternoon camps). If your child is absent on the attendance list, a Sport Western representative will first call home, then the parent’s work to confirm that the child is absent.

If you know in advance that your child will be absent from camp, we ask that you contact us at swcamps@uwo.ca or via the Sport Western hotline at 519.661.2007.

A full lunch service, for an additional charge, is available to Sport Western campers throughout the week at Thompson Arena.  This service is only available to campers who are enrolled in a FULL DAY or a combined AM & PM camp. Each lunch includes a main course item, a choice of snack, and a drink. We are proud to announce that healthy snack options and beverages will accompany every meal!

The cost for the lunch plan is $50 per week. If selected you must commit to the lunch service for the length of the camp week.
The lunch plan is distributed during the lunch hour.  It is recommended to pack addtional snacks for the morning and afternoon snack breaks.
*We strongly advise that campers opt into the lunch plan if you will NOT be packing a lunch for your children. Campers will not be permitted to purchase food items outside of the lunch plan.

FOOD ALLERGIES

Sport Western is a Peanut-Safe Zone, however the Thompson Arena is a public location. All campers will eat in a designated area. We request that campers do not bring any foods that contain peanuts (e.g. peanut butter, chocolate bars containing peanuts, etc.). We are unable control all of the foods and odours that campers may be exposed to at camp, although our counsellors do pay close attention to any allergies/medical concerns identified during the registration process. If your child has any food allergies we ask that you note this during online registration or on child’s registration form. We will make every attempt to accommodate their needs.

SWIMMING

The majority of camps include a half-hour recreational swim (based on operational availability).

Swims take place in the Western Student Recreation Centre pool. Campers are supervised by certified lifeguards and counsellors who have received pool training. The pool itself is 1.35 meters (4.4 feet) deep in the shallow end and 3.4 meters (11.2 feet) deep in the deep end. If you would prefer that your child wear a life jacket at all times, please indicate so during online registration or on the registration form.

On the first designated swim-day your child will be asked to perform a swimming test (unless the life jacket option has been selected). The swimming test requires the child to swim across the width of the shallow-end of the pool (counsellors are present in the water to supervise and assist if necessary). Any camper who does not pass the test will be required to wear a life jacket, regardless of whether he/she has passed any swimming levels. Whether a child passes a swim test is at the sole discretion of the trained lifeguard on duty. When the camper is dropped off on their first day please confirm life jacket requirements with his/her counsellor.
*Pool side activities will be provided and supervised should a camper decide not to swim on a given day.

WHAT TO WEAR & BRING TO CAMP?

Dress according to the weather (e.g. jacket / sweater / raincoat / umbrella). Drop-off, pick-up and all camp activities take place inside, however appropriate clothing is required for the transition to and from the Huron Flats Lot. For camp activities all children should wear comfortable clothes including shorts, t-shirt, and running shoes suitable for physical activity (white-soled running shoes are preferred). If other recommended clothing or sport-related items are required for a specific camp this will be stated in the camp description.

A water bottle is recommended to help replenish water loss experienced by physical activity (water bottles can be refilled throughout the day). Lunch should also be packed with the camper each day (unless a lunch plan has been pre-purchased) and snack items are recommended for all campers. A bathing suit and towel are needed for the recreational swim component on designated swim days. Please see swimming section for details.

Please label all items coming to camp (e.g. bathing suit, towel, and lunch bag). Campers are reminded not to bring items of value that are not required at camp (e.g. MP3/iPod, cell phones, and excessive amounts of money).

T-SHIRTS

All campers will receive a Sport Western camp t-shirt while they are at camp.

CHILDREN WITH SPECIAL NEEDS

Sport Western is committed to the inclusion of all campers. If your child requires additional support in order to attend camp, please e-mail swcamps@uwo.ca or contact us at 519.661.2007 prior to completing registration.

We are dedicated to providing all campers with an environment that will encourage social and physical development and must ensure that staffing resources are sufficient to accomplish this goal. Occasionally, additional support outside of our camp staff is required and our camp coordinator may request that you provide this support.

If accomodations are deemed sufficient to ensure a safe and enjoyable camp experience you will be asked to proceed with the registration process indicating their needs during online registration or on the registration form.
